Wassily Kandinsky// Artist Bio

Wassily Kandinsky took up the study of art in earnest at age 30, moving to Munich to study drawing and painting. A trained musician, Kandinsky approached color with a musician’s sensibility. An obsession with Monet led him to explore his own creative concepts of color on canvas, which were sometimes controversial among his contemporaries and critics, but Kandinsky emerged as a respected leader of the abstract art movement in the early 20th century. Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow on December 4, 1866 (December 16 by the Gregorian calendar), to musical parents Lidia Ticheeva and Vasily Silvestrovich Kandinsky, a tea merchant. When Kandinsky was about 5 years old, his parents divorced, and he moved to Odessa to live with an aunt, where he learned to play the piano and cello in grammar school, as well as study drawing with a coach. Even as a boy he had an intimate experience with art; the works of his childhood reveal rather specific color combinations, infused by his perception that "each color lives by its mysterious life."

Andy Warhol// Artist Bio

Born Andrew Warhol on August 6, 1928, in the neighborhood of Oakland in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warhol's parents were Slovakian immigrants. His father, Andrej Warhol, was a construction worker, while his mother, Julia Warhol, was an embroiderer. Andy Warhol was a successful magazine and ad illustrator who became a leading artist of the 1960s Pop art movements. He ventured into a wide variety of art forms, including performance art, filmmaking, video installations and writing and controversially blurred the lines between fine art and mainstream aesthetics. Warhol died on February 22, 1987, in New York City. When he graduated from college with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1949, Warhol moved to New York City to pursue a career as a commercial artist. It was also at this time that he dropped the "a" at the end of his last name to become Andy Warhol. He landed a job with Glamour magazine in September, and went on to become one of the most successful commercial artists of the 1950s. He won frequent awards for his uniquely whimsical style, using his own blotted line technique and rubber stamps to create his drawings.

David Hockney// Artist Bio

David Hockney (born 9 July 1937) is an English painter, draftsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. As an important contributor to the pop art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.

Hockney has owned residences and studios in Bridlington, and London, as well as two residences in California, where he has lived intermittently since 1964: one in the Hollywood Hills, one in Malibu, and an office and archives on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California.

On 15 November 2018, Hockney's 1972 work Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) sold at Christie's auction house in New York City for $90 million (£70 million), becoming the most expensive artwork by a living artist sold at auction. This broke the previous record, set by the 2013 sale of Jeff Koons's Balloon Dog (Orange) for $58.4 million. Hockney held this record until 15 May 2019 when Koons reclaimed the honour selling his Rabbit for more than $91 million at Christie's in New York.

Damien Hirst// Artist Bio

While born and bred in Bristol, a rebellious young Damien Hirst went on to study his craft at London’s Goldsmiths College in the late 80s.

During this period, he both curated and debuted his work in a group exhibition called Freeze. He and his fellow artists became known as the Young British Artists (YBA): a prolific jumble of creatives who often exhibited together and were famed for their edgy artistic styles and unique use of materials. Within the Freeze collection were some of Hirst’s first globally-recognised Spot paintings which he painted directly on the walls of the exhibition space in London’s Docklands.

As the world entered the 1990s, Hirst’s career skyrocketed and he was awarded the prestigious Turner Prize in 1995. He developed a close working relationship with Charles Saatchi, the well-known art tycoon, after Saatchi viewed his grotesque A Thousand Years piece which featured hundreds of maggots eating a dead cow’s head. Saatchi immediately saw promise in Hirst’s provocative and often absurd art, providing him with support and financing until the early 2000s.

Henri Matisse // Artist Bio

Henri Matisse first began using cut paper during the 1930s in the muted background shapes of Dance I and Dance II (the mural-scale compositions of the Barnes Collection) and continud to use it intermittently in the following decade in conjunction with painting and drawing. He returned to it during the second World War for the cut-out forms for Jazz, the book that the publisher Triade commissioned in 1943. Beginning with the Jazz commission and continuing throughout his use with cut paper, Matisse painted the paper with Linel brand gouache. "Unlike the Cubists who used scraps rescued from wastepaper baskets or dadaists who cut up old mail-order catalogues, Matisse was not even satisfied with the best commercial colored papers. He had his own papers painted with gouaches of his own choosing and then proceeded with scissors.

Anthony Christian // Artist Bio

Anthony Christian (b. 1945) was already making a name for himself by the tender age of ten as the only child in history to be granted permission to study by copying masterpieces in London’s National Gallery. His first major oil painting was a full-size, 6 by 4.5 feet, copy of Dutch master Philips Wouwermann’s Cavalry Battle. The work provoked media frenzy and the art world pronounced him a child prodigy.

The artist, today 73 years of age, has enjoyed an illustrious and unprecedented career as an artist. His art has taken him to America, France, Tibet and India, as well as many other countries where he associated with artists such as Dali, Picasso and Warhol, and where he painted (often portraits) for the rich and famous: from the late Lord Mountbatten and Peter Cazelet (in the Queen’s Royal Collection) to actors Terence Stamp and Donald Sutherland.

Faced with the choice of further fame as a society portraitist or searching out a greater, more profound artistic truth, Christian left England to live in Bali and South India where he set up a museum to display his life’s work. Based in Asia, he was able to quickly gain a wider clientele of collectors and a worldwide reputation for his Old Master technique.

Zari’s representation of Christian marks an important return to the city that developed his distinct ‘inner voice’, artistic conscience and critical eye that would judge everything he ever created as an artist. Vogue’s affirmation several decades ago: “Anthony Christian is a new world’s child who makes old world portraits,” remains equally true almost half a century on.

Sincere thank you to Anthony and Fanny Christian for allowing us to display his incredible images.

John Sibson // Artist Bio

I am a figurative a painter working from my studio in Appleby in Cumbria.

I also publish my own giclee reproductions.

I became better known for watercolours but as result of summer school at the Slade in London I have now enjoyed developing a distinctive style in oils and acrylics. This has also made me enjoy much more “plein air” painting.

Over many years I have had a multitude of one man and shared exhibitions in galleries, mostly in the North of England, but also in Scotland and as far afield as Spain and New Zealand.

In the past I have exhibited in the Mall galleries in London in the Royal Society of Marine Artists Open exhibitions and in the Houses of Parliament and more recently I have had regular success in having work accepted for, and been a prizewinner in the Cumbria Open Artists exhibitions.

Michael Gore // Artist Bio

At an early age I was introduced to the world of art by my late father, who was a fantastic pencil drawer.

This gave me great inspiration to pursue artwork of my own, which has led to me producing commissions for clients as far away as Australia.

Like a lot of people during the covid 19 pandemic I was made redundant in March 2020. Having been in full time employment for the best part of 41 years to suddenly having so much time on my hands I decided this was the time to renew my passion for painting, finally taking the step to follow my dreams of painting as a career rather than a hobby.

Jonathan Smith // Artist Bio

I am a self-taught oil painter, specialising in landscapes, especially those of northern England.

Using colour and tone, I try, through the medium of paint, to convey my emotions as I view a landscape that I find beautiful, or dramatic, or imposing. I am never trying to portray a certain object in all its clarity but rather I want to capture the objects as they sit in the landscape by conveying the envelope of light in which they sit. By doing this I can fulfil my aim of allowing the viewer to experience the feelings that inspired me when I was stood in front of the scene.

I use professional quality artists paint as these have the highest pigment load and can provide truer colours. My work is developed in my studio in Otley, using a limited palette, where I use photographs and sketches made at the time to help me capture the form of the landscape.

Steven Townsend // Artist Bio

Steven is a completely self-taught artist. He was born in Colne, East Lancashire in 1955 and still lives in the area with his wife and four children. Looking at the quality of Steven’s work today, it is hard to believe that he showed no talent for art as a schoolboy. He only began to paint when he was 27, during a period of redundancy and illness. He felt the urge to copy a picture of a Kingfisher and, to his surprise; he found he could do it with ease.

Robert Wyatt // Artist Bio

Robert Wyatt is an entirely self-taught artist, although his inspiration is drawn from the highly trained Renaissance painters, in particular those of northern Europe. A relative latecomer to the art world (his first commercial exhibition was in 2002 at the age of 36) he enjoyed a rapid increase in demand for his exhibition pieces, commissioned work and limited edition prints. Robert’s work has been exhibited at London’s Mall Gallery and Leeds City art Gallery along with several commercial galleries with pieces finding homes in collections throughout the UK and the Continent.

The techniques used in creation of the paintings are similar to those pioneered by the Old Masters, but with a contemporary and unique approach. Each piece is the result of a painstaking process which requires extensive planning, accurate draughtsmanship and the use of many layers, or glazes of paint.
